The Indie Alt Rock Artist We All Should Listen To

Big Bus Dream, the brainchild of Mike Shannon, is a name that has become synonymous with heartfelt storytelling and rich soundscapes in the indie alternative rock world. Starting his career in the 1980s at iconic venues like CBGBs, Shannon’s musical journey has been a road filled with triumphs, pauses, and creative reinventions. With each album, Big Bus Dream weaves together elements of post-punk, indie, and alt-rock to deliver timeless narratives, exploring both personal introspection and societal commentary while using his voice in ways I’ve never seen an artist do.

Early Years and Breakthrough

Mike Shannon first made waves in the music scene during the 1980s, performing at legendary clubs and playing alongside major names such as The Smithereens and Hootie & the Blowfish. Despite the momentum, Shannon took a 12-year hiatus from music due to legal and business challenges. When he returned in the 2000s with his band 4thWard, they debuted their self-titled album to critical acclaim, peaking at #20 on the National CMJ Top 200 charts. Following four years of successful touring alongside artists like Bob Dylan and the Black Crowes, Shannon transformed the group into what is now known as Big Bus Dream.

Big Bus Dream: Early Albums and Success

Big Bus Dream’s self-titled debut album in 2006 was well-received, earning the coveted Editor’s Pick title from CD Baby and high praise from “Americana UK”. Let me point out, that as a standalone artist without a label behind, this is one of the biggest successes anybody can have to skyrocket their sales and fandom. Multiple tracks from the album made their way onto popular TV shows such as “Pimp My Ride” and documentaries aired on WBTV. Following this, “The Jesters of Xmas Town” (2008) continued to build on the band’s momentum, with songs that topped European music charts.
The quality of the sound, the diversification and experimentation while taking risks were noted at this point, defining their sound into something fans could relate quickly and recognise easily.

Shannon’s focus on creating authentic, original music, and avoiding fleeting trends, has been a hallmark of his career. His literate, roots-rock style — often compared to Wilco, John Lennon, and Randy Newman — continues to charm both critics and fans alike with dozens, if not hundreds, of press and magazine releases talking about his continuous work.

Later Works: Evolving Sound and Continued Praise

In 2021, “Giant In My Mind” was released to critical acclaim, with “Stereo Stickman” praising its lyrics and peaceful arrangements, while “Jamsphere Music Magazine” labeled it “Big Bus Dream’s best work by a mile”. This album marked a return to form, showcasing Shannon’s skilful balance between deeply personal stories and broader social commentary. Songs like “Operator” and “Shiver” demonstrated his lyrical ability to blend nostalgia with a dreamlike quality, creating once again his own sound.

In 2022, Big Bus Dream continued this momentum with the release of “Hear Me Roar” (October 28), a collection that expanded on the themes of personal and societal reflection. The album was supported by singles like “Think Of Me” and “Yesterday Was Mine” with some of them including its own music video.

The Upcoming Chapter: New Releases and Ambitions

Looking ahead, Big Bus Dream is gearing up for another milestone in 2024. His highly anticipated single, ”Gonna Miss Missing You”, drops on October 10, with a full album release following on October 24. Shannon has shared with me his aspirations, believing the time is right to push his music to the next level and gain the recognition it deserves once again. This album might be the step needed to achieve just that, and as an insider into the new song, I can reveal that it’s worth every second of your time.
